CEDLA, in collaboration with Movies that Matter, kindly invites you to a special meeting with Mexican human rights activist Consuelo Morales as part of this year’s Movies that Matter Festival – A Matter of ACT (18-26 March, The Hague). Consuelo Morales is the protagonist of the documentary Kingdom of Shadows (Bernardo Ruiz, 2015), in which her story blends together with that of a drug enforcement special agent and a former drugs smuggler. Sister Consuelo Gloria Morales Elizondo is a member of the Congregation of Our Lady, Canons of St. Augustine. For years, she worked with indigenous communities in the state of Veracruz, and with street children. In 1993, she returned to her birthplace, Monterrey, where she set up the first human rights organization in the city, Citizens Supporting Human Rights (Ciudadanos en Apoyo de Derechos Humanos, CADHAC), which she has led since its foundation. In recent years, she focused primarily on Mexico’s most serious problem in this area, the over 27,000 desaparecidos (‘missing’).
This meeting aims to give students and others interested in the war on drugs and its effects in Mexico, the chance to listen to Consuelo’s story. The meeting also features selected scenes from the documentary. Consuelo will be introduced by Dr. Arij Ouweneel (CEDLA).
