The exhibition ‘Drawing on Violence. Comics from Argentina’ highlights two projects in which comics are used to raise awareness about human rights violations in Argentina.

The first series, ‘Historietas por la Identidad – Comics for Identity’, addresses the situation of the 500 children, now young adults between 35 and 40 years old, who were abducted during the military dictatorship and grew up under a false identify.

The second one deals with victims of police and institutional violence, a phenomenon that is directly rooted in the history of violence and authoritarianism in Argentina and the lack of structural reform of the security forces after the military dictatorship came to an end.

The comics gathered in this exhibition are powerful examples of how this particular medium can be used for advocacy and awareness raising purposes, disclosing individual stories of human rights abuses to a larger public in very direct ways.
