As a response to the crippling neoliberal restructuring of the economy, of which Latin American countries were arguably the first victim, many of those countries saw an upsurge of the social-democratic Left. Now, almost 20 years later, this “pink tide” has been all but defeated. How did this happen? More importantly: what is needed to get a new pink—or even better, red—tide going in the coming years?
